Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (ru\\ Юрий Алексеевич Гагарин) was born in 1934 as son of a carpenter and a dairy farmer in a small village called Клу́шино. In his youth Gagarin was a foundryman at a steel plant and later joined the Soviet Air Force as a pilot. Before he became an attendee as a cosmonaut, he was stationed near the Norwegian boarder in order to protect the Soviet airspace. In 1960 he was selected as cosmonaut for the Soviet Space program with five other aspirants.
Following his famous first spaceflight, Gagarin not only developed to be a wide-known celebrity and figurehead for the Soviet Union, he also became the training director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre (ru\\ Центр подготовки космонавтов имени Ю. А. Гагарина) in Zvyozdny gorodok, also known as “Star City”.
After completing training at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy on 17 February 1968, he was allowed to fly regular aircraft. Gagarin died five weeks later when the MiG-15 training jet crashed near the town of Kirzhach, which lays in the Vladimir Oblast. Yuri Gagrin left behind two daughters, his wife Valentina Gagarina and a legendary legacy.
